How to Make Sure Your Copy Sounds More Natural

Do you ever find yourself sitting down to write a blog post or email and suddenly you’re feeling like you should be in formal attire, ready to tackle the corporate world? (Just me?)

Okay, I might not actually be dressed like that, but there's something about writing for my own business that triggers this odd sense of formality. Writing for clients? Not a problem.

If this sounds familiar or if it's a new realization for you, you're not alone. Let's tackle this one together …

Whether you're a seasoned writer or just getting started, here are some tips to make sure your marketing copy sounds less salesy and more like it was written by an actual real human person who wants to connect.

How to Sound Less like Betty in Sales when you’re writing marketing copy

Release the crap from your head.

Did you know that the average person has about 48.6 thoughts per minute? Well, even if it was a quick internet search fact, it does make, right? When you're gearing up to write, you’re probably navigating through a mental shitshow. Your first task is to do a brain dump. Grab a pen, a pencil, a keyboard, or even a crayon, and get all those random thoughts out of your head. No editing, no overthinking—just let it flow. This will help clear your mind so you can start writing some meaningful content with a fresh slate (er mind).

Imagine the ONE person you want to help.

Choosing a clear avatar (ugh, sorry! I hate that word, too), or the one person you want to help, can make a significant difference. If you're struggling with your marketing copy, picturing someone specific—let's call her Gina—can make the writing process feel like a conversation. Writing to everyone can lead to sounding more like a lecturer. Nobody likes a lecture. Tailor your message as if you're addressing a friend, and it becomes instantly more relatable.

Start with a story.

We're wired to love stories. They connect us, draw us in, and give meaning to information. When writing copy, think of it as sharing a story with a friend. Your friend Gina. Avoid getting too formal. Just tell a relatable story and offer your help. When your reader can relate to the story, they're more likely to connect with what you're offering.

Bonus: Be authentic.

This is the hidden gem that emerges when you focus on speaking to one person and incorporating a story. Wanna make it even better? Embrace vulnerability. Be honest and authentic. Don’t know how to do that? There’s help for that.

The outcome …

Implementing these tips naturally infuses your writing with humanity, making it more interesting and relatable. The goal is to make your sales copy sound less like a sales pitch and more like a genuine connection. After all, isn't that what we’re all just trying to do?
